Yes, it's wonderful for honing skills because of the massive table and the curved bumpers around the pockets. Practice on that for awhile and when you play on a standard table, you will rock. You can find rules for both English and American snooker games in the BCA's Official Rules & Records Book. It is a very challenging game, played on 12 foot tables in England and 10 foot tables in America. The rounded pocket openings are designed to reject balls not hit perfectly. In fact, balls cannot be cut down a cushion as they will jaw in the pocket every time. Even though the balls are smaller, the ratio of the diameter of the balls are closer to the size of the pockets. Snooker does emphasize shotmaking. I would like to say that proficiency in snooker does not guarantee success in pocket billiards as many seem to believe. Snooker players often have a difficult time with games like 8 ball and 9 ball that have a powerful open break shot. Also snooker players are not always adept at "cheating the pocket" to obtain position. Additionally, snooker players aren't used to the rules in pocket billiards concerncing what makes a legal shot. The requirement that a ball contact a cushion after contact doesn't exist in English snooker. I do think that snooker players have great fundamentals. They stick to an open bridge, which I recommend to my students. They get their heads down low on most shots. It really is a great game. Good question. Yep. Requires a great deal of skill to play it well and like all billiards, position is everything.I also found it to requires more concentration since the table is a foot longer length and width, the balls and pockets are smaller.
Not as fast as 9 ball, but more enjoyable than three cushion billiards.
