It sounds like just a little nuance. All players have little quirks to their stroke. I usually rotate my cue in my grip hand a few times before I begin my practice strokes, similar to Santos Sambajon. I saw that question being asked on BBC coverage a year or so back. John Virgo said that it is just a habit picked up over the years from playing so much.Strange, because nearly every pro does it
When you think about it, when a player is doing a shot, his whole body must remain still, and actually that finger is the only part of their body they can move at the time - to relive some pressure I would imagine.
Just making sure the hand is stable.
