I want to buy my Dad a nice pool cue. Suggestions?

Question:I'd like to spend around 100$ on a nice 18oz cue. I've checked some web sites but I don't really know what I'm looking for (as far as brand names, types, etc.)

Anyone have any thoughts?

Opinions are going to vary on which cues are best. In that price range I think Players,Lucasi,or Action would be good choices. Most cues will be available in 18oz and 13mm tips would be standard. I suggest going with a cue with a maple shaft, which all of the above would have. I'm not a fan of the cuetec, or scorpion cues with the graphite shaft. Each to his own I guess. Good luck.

How do u hit the ball cause i don't know how?

There are a number of excellent brands. Cue-tech, Meucci and Ex Calibur come to mind. You want the shaft to be as straight and smooth as it can possibly be, and you want good balance. "Good balance" means that it feels good to your father and that it is not inclined to wiggle or make other extraneous movements when he holds it or shoot with it. Ideally it should feel very steady when he is in his stance and holding the butt of the cue lightly -- not gripping it like a baseball bat. Try using the cue yourself and see how it feels. Also, try holding it a few inches above a hard floor, vertically, shaft end up, and bouncing the butt end with the little rubber bumper against the floor. You should feel a minimum of vibration.

Also, some cues come with a second butt which lengthens the cue for a break stroke. This is handy, and the cue should still fee well-balanced when the break butt is attached.

And the looks? Yes, they are important because a good-looking cue just makes you want to play more.
