How do I buy a pool cue?
I am looking to buy my first pool cue and don't know what to look for. I have looked at some and there is such a price difference.

For your first cue you definitely don't want to spend a bunch of money. After you get past the 200 to 300 dollar range your just paying for a bunch of fancy ornementation that has nothing to do with how well the cue performs anyway. Thats fine if you have the extra cash and you want something fancy, but not necessary at all. I would recommend one of the cheaper McDermott or Viking cues. They are usually very well made and durable. Try some different ones and see what you like. Don't let anyone talk you into buying a cue that is too expensive or doesn't feel right to you. I am sorry to be simplistic, a pool que has to "feel" right if a £5 feels better than a £100 one go with your gut instinct, remember it is not the que that makes a good pool player it is the skill of person on the business end of it.No one is hearing my messages on the pool games?
Go for comfort. Pricey models are for very experienced players who demand certain characteristics from their cue. Go to a real pool hall and try out a few sticks. If the feel and weight are comfortable to you, see if you can afford the cue, and leave the looks of the cue for the last part of your decision. I shoot with a Meucci that I bought 15 years ago. I wouldn't trade it for the world. However, my break cue (which I only use to break with, saving wear and tear on the Meucci) cost me $5 at a yard sale. McDermott (200 +)
get something you will realize you will be replacing so dont spend a fortune, you will then figure out if you want a stiff hit or whippy, what weight, what kind of taper on the shaft.
