"Kick Turn" in swimming?
Question:I've always loved swimming just for fun, but I got a Y membership and thought I would start swimming laps. One thing I've never really got right is that turn people do at the end of a lane. Anyone able to describe that well?
Also, if there is any swimming etiquite or anything I should know, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

Can rigorous water work out make you physically stronger?
The Flip turn is hard to teach when you're in the water and even harder to teach by typing, so I'll just give you a link.http://www.ehow.com/how_5299_flip-turn-s...
As far as etiquette goes, there are a few things about lap swimming and sharing a lane. There are two ways to share a lane - circle swim and side swim. Circle swim is when you swim across the pool on one side and back on the other side. Side swim is where each person has one side and comes back on that same side of the lane. When either you enter a lane to share with another person or they come to share your lane, you have to agree on which way you will share the lane. If you are swimming circle style, there is another etiquette involving passing. When somebody wants to pass the other person, they touch them on the foot and when they reach the next wall, the person being passed stops and waits for the person behind to pass before going again.
Have you noticed that even at the Olympic level they sometimes mess up the turn.. Practice your timing.
The etiquette is that the lap people and the other swimmers try to use different parts of the pool. That varies by how many there are of each.
I am a beginner at Triathlons...I would like to know how to train for one?
i was on a swim team in middle n high school - i always sucked at kick turns haha i was always afraid of gettin water in my ears or nose!Dear Jes:
Don't worry about the "flip turn" right now. You are on the right track. Get in the water and swim...swim...swim. Once you have some experience, you can find a mentor in the water who can coach you on "turning."
You should learn "Lane Etiquette."
Because you joined the "Y," you should learn the posted rules on "lane swimming." At most pools, "lane etiquette" is the following:
Enter the lane on the right & swim in the right hand side of the lane in a counter-clockwise pattern around the black lane line at the bottom of the pool. Kick off the opposite side of the pool and return to the starting position on the right hand side of the lane. This allows for several swimmers to swim in the lane at the same time.
This is a VERY important rule to learn so you don't slam into another swimmer while practicing.
Keep swimming! Good luck to you & remember, have fun in da water!

What is the point of wearing a waterpolo swim cap, or other loose fitting cap?
I agree that you need to swim as much as possible for right now, but for future reference:I'm sure, as some one who loves that water, I'm sure you've done flips in the water before... Well doing a kick turn is a lot like that. You swim toward the wall, and when you get roughly a foot from the wall, (You'll have to practice this a lot) you go into your flip. But, instead of flipping all the way around, stop when your back is paralell to the floor, plant your feet on the wall, and turn over onto your stomach and kick off. You could turn over then plant your feet, But planting makes it easier for me to judge where I am while turning. I hope this helps, but It's going to take practice... If you get it right off the bat, I'll be very jealous of you
Hey Jes:
The turn that people do at the end of a lane is called a flip turn. To do a flip tun you need to know how to do a somersault in the water. If you know how to do that, then try swimming into the water slowly then when you get a little ways away from the black T in the water then press do 1/2 of a somersault. When your feet hit the wall press off and start swimming again. Timing is everything in the flip turn, and it takes a while to learn. Make sure you don't speed into the wall unless you know what you are doing though or you might hit your head and end up woth a big bruise on your head, not fun.
As far as swimming ettiquitte goes you need to be able to circle swim which involves staing on your half of the lane. Most swim clubs stay on the right side of the lane. When you get to the wall, you can do the flip turn or an open turn and then swim on the other side of the lane, which will now be the right. If you need to pass someone you touch their toes and pass them at the wall. Never stop in the middle of the pool because you will stop everyone who is behind you.
The other way to swim is to swim side by side. You will stay on one half of the lane. Like you might always stay on the side by the lane rope, or the side by the wall. This way is good if you are trying to pace yourself a long with someone else.
I hope this helps Jes!
Good workout for competive swimmer?
hey i am a swimmer for my high school and been swimming for sometime now but the flip turn is very easy and once you get it you can't mess up but you have to do a flip turn at a competition you can do an open turn... try being like a foot away for the end of the pool and just flip tuck your knees in towards you but not that much than kick of the wall and put your arms straighht out and glide through the water while doing a dolphin kick and try practicing in a 3 feet pool first and then you can go to you lane pool..like my coach always says just PRACTICE don't give up :)More Questions & Answers...
