Countries other than the US and a few others actually have very relaxed laws regarding public nudity and other public etiquette things regarding clothing. They also have different customs and traditions of course and in many other countries you'll commonly find men wearing Speedos (briefs are actually the correct term for them but since Speedo sells so many they just became known as Speedos).

I'd say be prepared to wear a Speedo and at least bring one (also try it on in a changing room just to make sure you don't feel totally uncomfortable in it). But then again if you just like totally don't fit in there you can wear your average American boardshorts or a similar article of swimwear, I'm sure they'll recognize you as an American anyways and they'll likely understand.

Another thing that you can do is you can go down to the end of any sports1234.com s' page and click on "sports1234.com s Brazil" and then use an online translator to translate things from/into Portugese and try to ask a question on there and translate any answers you get back. I've tried translating things using Yahoo!'s Babel Fish but sometimes things come out weird but you can at least try.
