What is the population of competitive swimmers / competitive swimming in the United States?

How would you approximate the number of people within the United States that either swim competitively, or have swum competitively at some time in the past? I am interested not just in the method for estimation, but also in the resulting number of swimmers identified. I greatly appreciate your answers!

for kid swimming there are about 20300 that are registered to USA swimming.org
