Is swimming good?
Im joinging a new gym, and they have a swimming pool. Is swimming lengths/w.e. u call them a good excersise? can u loose weight doing this?

I have read several articles on this and have found conflicting information on this topic. Essentially , swimming is a great form of exercise that works more muscle groups than most forms of exercise and is great for your heart. However, it is recommended that you incorporate other forms of exercise if you are trying to lose weight. You can burn a lot of calories while swimming if you do it correctly, but will also benefit from running, cycling, walking, aerobics, etc. The good thing about swimming is that it is an overall body workout that is easy on the joints. My advice would be to mix things up. Swim one day, walk or cycle the next and strength train another day. This will add variety to your routine and keep you from getting bored. You will also lose weight .Swimmers come in all shapes and sizes. If you gain muscle easily you may become bulkier. However, a lot of swimmers are very lean. It just depends on your body type. I would suggest giving swimming a try since it's such a great form of exercise and can be done at any age. Good luck!

hehe, well swimming is a nice aerobic workout, but according to chemistry, you don't burn many more calories in the pool than any other exercise. One of the best benefits of long-term swimming is that the extensive workouts--anywhere from half and hour to four hours at a time, depending on your ability as a swimmer-- do exercise more muscles than almost any other sport. You might feel sore after the first few days, but believe me, you're better off for it. However, if you're joining the gym to get healthy, swimming is the best cardiovascular workout, it would make your heart very strong lowering the risk of heart diseases, heart attacks and high blood pressure. It also develops your endurance in strenous physical activity. It also strengthens your lungs.If you really want to get the best out of swimming you have to do it competitively. You can't just do laps, you have to push yourself to go faster in swimming to get the optimal exercise. To get faster means you have to change certain lifestyle habits such as the food you eat, swimmers don't usually eat junk food or even soda because it shows in the pool through your speed. It's not about the number of laps its about how fast.
Finally, it tones your muscles very well especially your leg and arms but sometimes women swimmers don't have legs and arms that are very appealing to conventional figure of women -- they tend to get really big arms and legs not slim but this is all muscle and not fat. So technically its healthy, but if you're doing this to look sexy it would make you look more butch =P
