The specs for how much sand is used should be on the filter decal plate. Most home style filters take 300lbs.

You can change the sand whenever you lose 3/4 of the total amount to backwashing. There isn't any real date set so this is different for everyone. The dirtier your sand is the better it will clean though. This sounds counter intuitive but it's because the particles act as a filter themselves by making the gaps between sand grains smaller. If it's been 5 years or longer then it could do for a change just for sanitation sake.

Why is it if a guy wears a thong or speedo type swimsuit, they are automaticly pressumed gay?

If you have a Chlorine pool the average is about every 3-4 yrs if the sand isn't cleaned like it is supposed to be. If kept clean every 5-6 years. If you have a Baquacil pool the sand should be changed every year. Average pools take between 200-300 lbs.
