While running does stress your joints, this is a GOOD thing. I know far too many individuals who have swam hard for months with little to no outside excersize only to see them blow a knee or sprain an ankle playing joint-intensive sports like basketball, soccer, tennis, etc., because they havent worked out those joints in forever. I can almost GUARANTEE an injury if you do nothing but swim for months and quickly transition to a running-intensive sport.

Swimming is going to give you the most complete results...you work out way more muscles than with running alone. Controlled breathing is also going to give you a great cardio benefit

cross train it up!! swimming is better for the joints (zero impact) and it's a much better cardio workout as you are working your arms, legs and torso at the same time.

But prefer the swimming and cycling because I have a bad knee and running is tough on it sometimes. If your worried about the stress on joints from running you can always take up cycling. But everybodies different. I knew a lady that ran until she was in her 80's. So I think its more so how you take care of your body. Everybody's body is different and reacts differently to excersize. I'd say if you have joint problems now stick with the swimming and/or cycling.

Its all personal preference in my eyes. What motivates you to excersize more the running or the swimming.
