You should get in contact with the ASPIRE ACADEMY for Excellence in Sport in Doha, QATAR. This school opened 2 years ago, next to where we live in Doha and it was inaugurated by the Emir of Qatar last November. The infrastructure is just amazing.

The Academy of ASPIRE has set itself a mission to discover the best young sporting talent from the region and around the world, and using the state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated sports programmes, it will turn hopefuls into winners at the highest levels of international competition.

The department is made up five key elements; Football; Athletics, including hurdles, sprinting, pole vault, high and long jump, running, discus and javelin, together; A Multi-Sport group including swimming, squash, volleyball and basketball; Table Tennis and Sailing.

For each sporting activity, ASPIRE will always strive to turn talented children into champions who will inspire generations to come. This is achieved by recruiting internationally recognised coaches, many of whom have been champions themselves.

ASPIRE's Talent Identification Program is a nation wide initiative that works in close coordination with teachers from the public schools in order to find students who have exceptional physical talent and offer them a scholarship to ASPIRE. These athletes are then filtered into ASPIRE primary sports and train at ASPIRE.

ASPIRE also works with the local Sports Federations and many curent ASPIRE students are supported by ASPIRE but train and compete with the local federations.

In 2004 for example, 8000 children participated in the program and 6000 in 2005. Every year only approximately 70 students will be offered seats in the academy.

Stages of the program:
The ASPIRE's Talent Identification Program consist of three stages, namely Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The Bronze:
Bronze is the first stage and consists of bio-diametric tests. This includes the analysis of different body dimensions and their ratios or proportionalities with other body dimensions, such as the ratio of standing height to arm span. A total of four body shape tests and five physical tests are used in the Bronze stage of testing. The Bronze stage is conducted in the Public School system (Ministry of Education and Independent schools) throughout Qatar. Usually a large number of students are tested in this stage and only the most talented athletes move to the next stage.

The Silver:
In the Silver phase, about 10% of the total of students from the Bronze stage are invited to attend.
Students in this stage are assessed on a larger range of tests. These include the same four body shape tests as well as seven physical tests. The tests are slightly more complex and more attention is paid to the accuracy of the measurement as well as how the students cope with the increased competition as only the most talented children make it to the Silver stage of testing. A great deal more emphasis is put on how students react to tougher competition? Can they rise to the occasion or do they become overwhelmed by it?

The Gold:
Approximately 30% of the students from the Silver stage will make it to the Gold stage. Students who make it through to the Gold stage are invited to spend a few days at ASPIRE.
While at ASPIRE they will be placed into small groups and an ASPIRE coach will evaluate each student on such things as how talented they are, how hard they work, how quickly they pick up a new skills, how quickly they recover from a hard training set, how they react in a group setting, how well do they listen to the coach, and many other factors. The ASPIRE sport science staff will also conduct more scientific testing to determine their physiological, bio-mechanical, or psychological skills.

If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest drown too?

I know you're probably trying to stay close to home, but maybe you could try to enroll her in a swim camp here in the US next summer. Most camps don't take anyone until the age of 9 anyway. There are many to choose from and I'm not sure if it's possible, but some might offer scholarships or reduced fees for promising swimmers with limited funding if that's an issue. I would recommend checking with major universities especially since they tend to have bigger budgets and larger programs. There are outstanding programs at the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina.
Kenyon College, a small liberal arts college in Ohio, is the US Small College Women's Swimming champions over the past few years and has excellent coaches who run a camp as well.
