Opening your eyes underwater...I would describe it is uncomfortable more than painful. Even then, the actual discomfort comes after surfacing when your eyes are exposed to air again. Having them open underwater isn't that bad at all once you are used to it, but as soon as you surface you will feel a stinging sensation as the water starts to evaporate and leave salt on your eyes. How to teach my child to swim without an instructor?

To me, it feels about the same as opening them in a chlorinated pool. The difference is when I get out of a pool, my eyes are very irritated, and it takes hours for them to get back to normal. When I get out of an ocean, my eyes feel better and the redness goes away after about an hour.Yes, never put salt in your eyes. lol That was a lline on a comedy show, you had to be there. Anyway, salt in your eyes does hurt, no matter. Best wishes
It actually hurts more in a pool because of all the chemicals in the water and it makes your eyes bloodshot!
I have swam in the ocean. No, the salt doesn't hurt your eyes, but the water isn't as clean as it looks. Get a diving mask or goggles if you want to see anything. The chlorine in a swimming pool doesn't hurt your eyes, its the pH (acid/base) difference from your eyes that burns.

ocean water is more salty than your natural tears, which is why is hurts to open eyes under the ocean. Chlorine doesn't have to hurt at all, unless there is too much in the water.Help!! i have a veri good kiking but my arms r like weak any suggestions?
Your eyes naturally contain salt water like in most Oceans so the Oceans should not bother your eyes, unless it is the dead sea which is much more concentrated.yes, of course..
How many laps = 1 mile in an olympic swimming pool?
I have never had trouble opening my eyes in salt water. Chlorine stings my eyes more. The only thing is that because the water isn't clear, you still can't see very far. Your tears are salt water. Eye wash that people use to clean their eyes after getting a chemical contaminate in them is a salt water solution, i.e. saline solution. Give it a try- even if it stings a little at first, your eyes will adjust, they just aren't used to it. It won't cause long term damage and any sting will go away very quickly, if it even stings at all. What is it like swimming with kick trainers and do pools allow you to use them in public sessions?
Both sting my eyes but I find out that it's not so much the salt water that stings than it is the sand in the water. There is no point in opening your eyes in salt water, you won't be able to see anything. My recomendation is wear goggles or a mask or keep your eyes close.Whats the best way to master the back flip??
