How long can you hold your breath for?

Question:How long can you hold your breath for? I'm 12 years old, and I can hold my breath above water for 32 seconds and underwater about 25 seconds! I can't swim! What about you?

Used to hold my breath for more than 3 minutes swimming under water all the time. Now, I can hold my breath for less than 2 minutes, I'm not as young as I used to be. Now a days I can hold my breath as long as I can because of my body mass. Oxygen is stored in the muscles. If you simply float for a few minutes without exerting yourself you can stay under longer. The harder you work the quicker you use up the oxygen in your muscles and lungs. The trick to swimming long distances under water is to use a stroke that wastes as little power as possible. Rather than scissor kicking I porpoise (both feet together in the up and down motion like a dolphin or whale). Uses much less energy and you can accomplish more distance with less resistance.

Some people can hold their breath for over one minute. But this practice is dangerous - don't try to do so, particularly not under water, cos once your body gets accustom to it, you may stop breathing automatically - which will endanger your life.
