Subterranean Apnea: Criteria of Assessment?
Hello Members of the Yahoo! Community. I am new here. Today, after six attemps over the course of two days, I managed to hold my breath underwater for 4 minutes and 18 seconds. I was floating face-down in a small swimming pool undisturbed by others. My question is: What value does this time have considering that my face was immersed only by a few inches? Would such a time have greater value if I had been sitting at the bottom of the pool? I take it that the answer would be "yes," as the pressure on one's lungs is greater at the bottom of a swimming pool than at the surface. But how much a difference does this make? Thank you for any responses. Chris.

The pressure difference between the surface of a pool and the bottom shouldn't be great enough to seriously affect your lung capacity. The biggest difference will be how you stay in place. If you have to move around to keep yourself at the bottom of the pool, you'll be using more of the oxygen you need to breathe. If, however, you're using weights to hold yourself to the bottom of the pool, your time should be similar.
