What is it like to drown?

Question:I mean, a first hand account from a survivor who passed out and was revived. Sorry to sound morbid, but I have always wondered. I heard that it is fast and silent, but that the victims are usually found by divers with a look of terror on their faces.

I imagine it as being first a lot of choking and coughing, the same as when you get a drink of water down the wrong tube. But, because you are underwater, you keep inhaling more water, instead of air. Finally, after a few seconds of this, you run out of air, and you faint. This does not sound too painful, but must be very frightening for most people, as you know that you are about to die. My guess is that it is this fear, and not pain, that causes the look on the victims faces.

Not trying to make anyone upset. Just wondering.

PS: I have almost drowned several times in my life, but always seemed to rescue myself at the last few seconds. One day, my luck might run out, and I'm curious what its like to leave like that.

Does swimming help you grow ur muscles?

there are 5 stages to drowning.the first stage is surprise, there is no screaming or yelling and the victim is afraid...they are in a near vertical position...the 2nd stage is involuntary breath holding, they are now below the water and the body involuntary closes the epiglottis which closes the airways...next the person becomes unconcious, the body shuts down from lack of o2..the body sinks either rapidly or slowly depends on conditions, next is the stage of convulisions...there may be violent jerking or convulsions of the body, due to the fact of lack of oxygen, then they may go rigid...next is death.. the person actully goes into cardiac arrest, but being unconcious they dont feel the pain,,, so there is no signs of horror it all happens all so quickly after you go under the water...its very grafic but you asked

How to perform a tumble turn?

From what I hear (from the history channel), drowning is one of the most painful ways to die. Apparently it's a 5 step deal. Although I don't remember what all 5 steps are. It's not as fast as you may think. Body shuts down one organ at a time. They say it feels like your head is going to explode. Very painful! I wish I could remember more, but it was so long ago that I watched this program.

Good luck to you.

I disagree with your guess. I think when somebody's under the pressure of surviving when every second is crucial, they're too focused on fighting for their life to feel terrified.

If you were in that situation, you'd get a lot of adrenaline. Anytime I've gotten into a dangerous situation, I've gotten adrenaline and I ended up feeling great at the end.

It's when you THINK about it, that you feel terrified. I really don't think it would be that bad.

First, you're underwater, so you'd probably only inhale to get the last bit of air inside your throat and mouth. I don't think there would be coughing because it's all water you'd be sucking in, no air at all to mix with the water and make you cough.

If you still couldn't get out, you'd probably start to feel pain from not getting air. It shouldn't hurt because of the adrenaline. Pain is your body telling you to take action. But pain occurs in spurts, so you might only feel a few spurts before you go unconscious.

Here's the key. If you're feeling pain you still have a chance. (Pain is a warning system, which is what you want. That's why you see people on drugs die doing other stuff, because their body can't warn them that they need to take action.) And if you go unconscious, well, then you can forget about the pain. See, even in this violent moment, it's a win-win situation. You can't be dead and in pain at the same time.

p.s. If it's so bad, don't you think you're going to have adrenaline rushing through your body? And do you think if you're incurring brain damage or organ damage you would really care, given the fact that you could die altogether? I think people underestimate organisms in life-threatening situations like this. Your entire physiology changes. You only experience moments like that a few times in your life. You become a whole different thing.

I scraped my knees real bad and I need to swim next wednesday...?

Well you're obviously very frightened. The only thing I know is that you can't scream for help like people do in the movies. It's probably just like drinking water down the wrong tube forever.

What is the difference between "butterfly" and "dophin" styles?

first a ton of water comes into your mouth and you can't breath and something is preventing you from coming to the surface, so your in the water where there is no oxygen and you die, cuz you need oxygen to breath.you shoulda learned that in like, 5th grade. HANG YO HEAD IN SHAME!!

I came close once. you become totally confused and disorientated and stay that way for a short while after you've been pulled from the water.
