In swimming how long is a length?

I recently started swimming around 20 laps a day in my subdivisions pool it is roughly 40 yards long. I count a lap as once there and back (obviously). But how long is a length?

A lap is two lengths of the pool - whatever the size of the pool! Olympic sized pools are 50 meters long (one length), a lap 100 meters - obviously quite different than a lap or length of your neighborhood pool.
