A trick I used to use when teaching people to dive is to have someone sit on the side of the pool and put their arm or a soft pole in front of your shins. When you dive, you want to make sure you don't touch the pole/arm. As you get more comfortable, move the pole further away from the edge of the pool so that you are diving out, yet keeping your legs straight so as to not hit the pole (this also works with a foam "noodle")

When you are doing you starting dive, just make you that you raise your hips, and point you toes. This will cause you to look like a torpedo, and you will glide like one right into the water. Can falling in a deep water body from a very high spot without a parachute kill you?
When diving, don't just dive outward, you actually want to jump upward and then down. You will enter the water further out, and carry more speed. One thing that helped me when I was learning racing starts was to throw your head up at the start and then back down. Your body will naturally follow your head. It may feel odd at first to jump up like that but give it time, a great racing start can take many years.More Questions & Answers...
