Are swimsuits for water polo different from regular swimsuits?
They look different.
Answers:
Swimmers are looking for speed, thus they require a suit that forms to the curves of the body. The tighter, and smoother fit allows for a more hydrodynamic surface. Regular swim speedos usually consist of around 75% nylon, and around 25% Lycra spandex. If a regular speedo is stretched, the material usually becomes opaque, thus revealing a bit too much.
However, water polo players do not care for the extra few seconds saved swimming across the pool. Water polo, like many other team sports, is a very aggressive game. Players usually grab speedos to slow their opponent. (This is also why water polo players usually wear two speedos.) Therefore, a tough non-stretch material is proffered. Most water polo speedos are made of 100% polyester to prevent the permanent stretching of the material.
