You should use the part of the stroke when your hands are passing your hips to push yourself forward (Your thumbe should almost touch). Only your face should come out of the water, not your whole upper body. Your head should be back in the water before your hands go back in the water.Yes, as you say, your "hands are in a weird position," but if you are doing it right, it is the power position of the stroke.
Try swimming with fins & don't think about where your kicks go. If you are swimming the butterfly correctly, they should just be there naturally. Let your arms & head lead & your legs should follow.
Sounds right except your head and shoulders should start to rise up as your hands pass by your chest, then it's easy to lift your head when you said... well fairly easy. Maybe you need to undulate your body a bit more as you do the stroke. Once you get it its a lot easier

At the second stroke, as your arms move upwards out of the water, the head goes up with them.Amount of water needed to float a pool raft?
I agree w/ aehanrahanThe thing with the fins though, is that once you get the dolphin motion down, you will be going to fast to do the arms also... I love fins :P
