Wow, a swim class- I knew this was a board for geniuses.OK, first of all, never swim alone if you dont know how.
Get in the water, and hold your arms on the side (shallow water) and stick your head in the water blowing bubbles.
Then remember this- if you hold yoru breath, you will float to the top. Then just move your arms like a windmill and kick your feet.

Can swimming make you a faster runner?
KEY ASPECTS::-Always relax if you feel as though you are sinking (unless you have regular clothes and/or shoes on...)
-Don't swim alone!
-Chill, you won't drown
-Swimming is for fun ^_^
-The water is friendly, not deadly.
Basic swimming:
1. cup hands with fingers together
2. push self forward in water by kicking off a surface (while remaining absolutely chill)
3. Move arms in forward, circular, alternating movements at a steady pace [fully extend arms when forward and you don't have to put them up in the air like you're waving, just enough to get above your head] while simotainiously moving legs as if to mimmick tapping your index and middle fingers on a table ( keep knees unbent )
IF YOU WANT TO STOP WHILE UNABLE TO STAND:
1. Chill and stop moving
2. Tilt head slightly back as if you were lying in bed
3. Do not panic if your face gets wet, just let your natural bouyancy keep your head out of water.
Why do we need a mask to see clearly underwater?
be prepared to drink allot of water if your not patient but go to the Y and get lesson and remember to wear some kind of float device if you heavy headed and don't know how to relax and floatGo to your local swimming pool and ask about swimming lessons.
Some community education authorities do evening classes in swimming using the learner pools at local schools.
You can get videos about learning to swim either to buy or you might be able to get one from your local library.
The 'how' can't really be answered here but swimming is one of those things that is so unbelievably easy when you know how to do it - like riding a bike.
Very elderly people often learn to swim if they are taught properly and are able to overcome any fears about water. Pools are much better designed now and some don't have a deep end so people don't need to worry about getting out of their depth.
I often watch babies swimming ( complete with armbands and vigilant parents of course) - it comes naturally to most of them. They feel the water - start to kick and away they go!

Try using a board and kick your own legs up and down, if not go to a swimming class.Did you ever swim with your clothes on?
The key to learning how to swim is relaxing and becoming comfortable in the water. If you don't have a fear of the water, for example you can put your face in the water without freaking out then the 1st thing you should learn how to do if float.
It you do have a fear of the water then 1st practice bobbing (inhaling above the water and exhaling under the water -basically taking deep breathes then blowing it out -bubbles -you must go under the water). Bobbing is like blowing out the candles on a birthday cake (you know making a wish) -dont worry about choking if you are blowing air out of your mouth water can't get in your mouth, but as soon as you bring your face out of the water open you mouth to inhale and breathe again.
1st try bobbing while holding the wall, then slowly work you way to bobbing away from the wall (arms out in front of you, arms on your waist). Being able to go under the water away from the wall is a big step. Eventually you want to be able to walk to the wall while bobbing, even hopping to the wall while bobbing -we call that Kangaroo Hopping.
If you are afaid of putting you head under the water all at one time take small steps, chin under, then mouth, then nose, then eyes, and finally head.
Once you are comfortable in the water you should practice floating.
To float: 1st squat (act like you are sitting in a chair) in the pool making sure your shoulders are under the water, then hold both of your arms out in front of you like a "super hero", then lift one leg behind you, put your face in the water tucking your chin in your chest (face not your head; rule of thumb make your forehead touchs the pool, you can't swim with your head under the water -YOU WILL SINK), then lift the other leg behind you. Don't forget to blow bubbles.
To recover bring both knees in your chest and stand up.
Remember the key is relaxation. When you are tense you contract your muscles making them heavier, that is why so many people sink. But if you relax your muscles then you will float, the water will hold you up -you just cant fight the water (submitt to it, trust it, be its friend).
Once you learn how to float you are on your way to swimming.
Basic movements through the water after floating can begin with front glide.
You put your back against the wall of the pool, one foot against the wall, make a rocket with you hands over your head (shoulders covering your ears), lean foward putting you FACE in the water (blow bubbles), then push off the wall with your foot, keeping you rocket.
If you relax and keep your face down (don't raise your head until you are ready to recover) you will glide through the water. And don't forget to keep your "Rocket".
After that you front glide with a kick. You can practice first holding on to the wall with both hands and kicking your feet. You can even practice kicking while holding the wall and putting your FACE in the water (Don't forget to blow bubbles).
Remember when you are kicking to point your toes and kick from the hips, don't bend your knees, you are really lifting you leg from the hip joint. The top of your feet should "smack" the water. Your butt should wiggle from side to side.
Then just add that to your front glide:
Back against the wall, one foot against the wall, make your rocket, FACE in the water (blow bubbles), push off the wall (face still in the water), glide, then kick your legs (don't bend you knees).
Then after that you add arms.
Before you try to move your arms in the water while gliding I suggest you practice the movement outside of the pool, this can be done with the kick techinque as well.
Stand outside the pool, make your rocket above your head (shoulders covering your ears). You bring one arm down all the way to your thigh (make sure your thumb touches your thigh), continue this motion in a circluar pattern, bring the arm back and around, making a big circle, and ending in the starting position (returning to your rocket). Then you do the same thing with your other arm. Practice making big circles with you arms, each time making sure to bring your hands overs your head when you make that cicrle. (Like the "windmill" -have you ever witnessed two girls fighting they kind of just close their eyes and star windmilling their arms?) After you do this standing str8 up and down practice it bending at the waist, just tuck your chin in your chest to imitate you putting your FACE (not your head) in the water.
Once you have that you add it to the rest:
Back against the wall, one foot against the wall, make your rocket, face in the water, push of the wall, glide -keeping your rocket, kick you feet, one arm big circle, other arm big circle, keep kicking though, some people forget to kick when they start moving their arms.
Anyway, practice practice practice, you can work on technique later this is just a quick 1-2-3 approach.
Remember to relax, and blow bubbles!!11
