Bromine is something that if you start you must stick with unless you empty and refill the pool. If you add chlorine to a bromine pool the chlorine will convert the bromides ("used" bromine) back to free bromine and this turns the free chlorine into combined chlorines. Addition of more chlorine does nothing and addition of more bromine does nothing, once this cycle starts it's virtually impossible to eliminate without draining the pool.Based on the above, this means you can never shock your pool. When the time comes to shock the pool you will be forced to use one of the oxygen shock products out there but these cause serious problems in a lot of pools. These oxygen products (perborate, persulfate, potassium monopersulfate, etc.) can convert the chloramines (combined chlorines) into nitrates. Nitrates are the bottom level of the nitrogen cycle (aquarium keepers are VERY familiar with this) from ammonia to nitrite to nitrate and is the main food source for algae, bacterium, and other things you don't want growing in your pool.
Chlorine is an easy to use product and is readily available anywhere. One of the nice things about chlorine pools is that you can shock the pool (or maintain chlorine levels) with generic bleach from the grocery store or Sam's Club/Costco. You can get a case of bleach for about $.99/gallon and it won't harm your pool at all.
About the only downside to a chlorinated pool is that you are going to have to keep an eye on it. Unstabilized chlorine will burn out of a pool in the course of one sunny day. You can pick up stabilizer from your local pool store or Lowe's/Home Depot to add to the pool. Once it's in the water it is always in the water (it dilutes as you refill the pool after evaporation or backwashing, but is easy to add a bit more back in) and will continue to stabilize chlorine against burn off.

How long should a pool be, at least, if you want to be able to swim laps?
You have to carefully weigh the benefits vs. the risks. I listened to the man I bought my spa from and went with chlorine. How do you float at the top of deep water?
Don't go with bromine, can't really infer any pros, but the cons are ozone depletion of 60 compared to chlorine. Somewhat more caustic than chlorine on metalic parts. Although chlorine is corrosive as well in undiluted format.Do SCUBA certifications expire?
bromine leaves the skin itchy, dry and sometimes rashy, chlorine is much safer, i think.More Questions & Answers...
