What should I do in MY situation, keep swimming or quit for a while?
Question:Ok,here's my situation,thank you for reading it all
I have been swimming for as long as I can remember. I have played some other sports,but I'm not to good at any but swimming. I have to work really hard to get where I am, which is bothering me since a lot of my other teammates slack off all the time and still get great results at meets.Anyway, I get very sore from swimming very fast since I have to work so hard, and I have been pushing past the pain for a while,but is it really worth it? I love my coach and teammates, we're all friends. I don't want to leave them, I am one of the team leaders. But I have been getting so sore and tired and out of breath, and no one appriciates it, and it doesn't even matter that much in the end. But I love my team! I am a distance swimmer, not a sprinter, so it takes a while to get into good shape for me. But would taking a month of so off hurt me that much? How long would it take me to get back into top shape again?Should I leave my friends?thnks

As a distance swimmer, you should not totally drop out but you should consider tapering, even if you aren't at the point in the season when you normally would. Lighter practices and fewer practices for the next few weeks are probably a good idea. You may also want to consider entering some middle distance events or even working on strokes other then freestyle. If your body hurts, you need to take a break and give it some rest but I wouldn't reccomend quitting entirely. If you've been sore for a while or the soreness seems to be increasing in intensity or there is actual pain, you should see a doctor to make sure you don't have an injury that you are unaware of. Tell your team how much pain and soreness you are experiencing. Don't push yourself to the point where you risk getting injured.hey wow we have a ton incommin and i tottaly know what your talking about cause im a distance swimmer too and i also play waterpolo iv been swimming forever too and i remember when i first started polo i was the fastest on the team and it took me forever to get that fast and everyone else had just started swimming and could bairley swim but after a couple months they were lapping me. i made varsity my freshman year for swim and i would work so hard and it just seamed like it was just so easy for everyone. i dont think i was born a swimmer but its something i defanitly love. i also know that its a dedication. i didnt swim for 3 weeks one time when i hurt my wrist and it was the worst ever. everyone was lapping me when i came back and i would always be the last one at the wall and i just felt like everyone was looking down on me. feeling sore is just something that basically any athlete has to take. if you take a break getting back in shape will be the hardest workout youll have. if your really in pain lower your workouts or something. but i think the best advise i could give to you is to just stick it out and sooner or later everyone will be eating your bubbles.

it really isnt worth quitting after you've worked so hard, and its not about recognition, its about how proud of yourself your are. and if you really love doing it then why stop? if you really feel you could use a break from swimming, try other water sports like water polo or synchronized swimming. That should keep you in shape.Think about it for a while. It definitely seems like you wanna take a break so go ahead and take on. After a week see how you feel and if you feel that you can do without the swimming then stop for a while. But yeah it might take you a bit to get back into shape especially if you slack off too much. Just don't mess things up too much while you're on the break so you can go back if you want to. Like don't eat too much and get fat and all that because swimmers eat a lot so they can have enough energy especially serious ones. So yeah go ahead and take a break. I don't think talking to your team would do any good because they might just look at what you're saying as something negative. Like "oh he's just upset because he doesn't come in first," or something like that. Taking a break would be the best thing, if I ever start to lose motivation or am just pissed after I take a break for a day or two I get back my motivation and want to get back in the pool and start swimming.
Is YMCA a good place to swim as an exercise?
If you are swimming for the recognition of others, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. You should swim because you love it. If you swim for the love of it, you will get past the pain & frustration. The hard work and commitment will payoff, no matter what your times say.I swam at 3 different levels: on a Rec team, HS & Junior College. On my rec team, I was ok when I was younger, but never made finals at Championships until I was 15 & had started swimming in HS. For my last 4 years on the team, I was #2 or 3 in the league in my best event (50yd fly). I worked so hard every year to be #1, but could never win that race. I got my best time when I was 16. I swam in college and perfected my technique, but my times didn't get any faster than when I was younger with horrible technique. But I learned to really work hard for myself and my team. I loved being pushed and pushing others. I could have given up because I was training really hard and not getting the times I wanted, but I would have regretted that decision. I learned what it meant to really work hard.
This is something that you should really think about.
As far as taking a month off... It will take you just as long to get back in shape as if you take 3 months off, or more.
It sounds as though there is some mental fatigue involved here, as well as physical fatigue. You say that you have played some other sports but you aren't too good at anything but swimming. So -- what do you do for cross-training? It's as important as your sport training because if challenges your body in different ways and keeps your mind alert. If you've been getting sore, and tired, and out of breath, you might also need to have a physical checkup. It's quite easy to deplete your blood iron level, and that can make you feel sore, tired, out of breath and just generally down.
Distances swimmers can (and should) take breaks, but they should make sure that those breaks involve enough activity to keep up their general level of conditioning, so it isn't so hard to come back.
But do think about getting a medical from a good sports doctor, who knows what to look for, and asking your coach about some cross training activities that will give you some time out of the pool.

I completely understand, I would recommend sticking in out and if you quit then its going to be harder to get back in shape and they appreciate you they may just not say anything so talk to them about it and everything and distance swimmers arent supposed to be fast their suppose to pace themselves so they go at the same pace for the entire race and work realyl hard when you have to but dont slack off at practice just dont kill yourself work harder but not as hard as you have been so your not slacking off and yuor working harder but you dont want to be so sore, right now I have been having shoulder pains and I just work through it and muscle cramps suck too whihc I get but you just work through it and if its something you love just keep on doing it and it sucks that you try and you have to work for your results and others dont work as hard and they jsut come to them trust me I feel your pain because thats the exact same thing that I went through but you just deal with it and just do what you love. If you leave your friends what would you tell them? I mean the truth but quitters never win and winners never quit thats a famous quote and no matter how hard it gets jsut keep going and it will all work out in the end.More Questions & Answers...
