Start by practicing in shallow water/water that you are able to stand in. You must first learn/discipline yourself to "float" If you have a fear of water practice floating on your back first. To float, you just lay back in the water and push your weight up as if you are about to go to sleep, make sure your legs are leveled parallel.

you should get arm floaties, that will help to float, after a while you wont need them
