Mile problems? Seeking Advice?

Im 16 next week and swam the mile (1650 yd) twice in the past month. My first attempt landed me at a time of 18:54. I came in second and the person in first who was alos from my team came in at a 17:46. Last week we had time trials and I was in the lane next to that guy. The first 600 was neck-in-neck, but once he started to slide slightly ahead, I lost all pace and technique, and landed myself at a time of 19:21 and he at a 18:09. Wat happened to me. All i know is that during the first 500, I went a 5:18 which is my best 500 time by 3 seconds. What happened?

What are the requirements for a life guard?

Looks like you two pushed each other very hard and just bonked at the end. I'm assuming you two do similar workouts during practice since you're both long distance swimmers. Try being competitive with him during practice as well, he'll see you pushing, and will push you as well. This can only benefit the both of you come competition.

When you do your skulling drills, focus on "grabbing the water" at the entry point, pushing hard at the thigh and out of the water, and getting good distance per stroke. DPS and breath control is key! Good luck.

Are U On A Swim team??When And Why?

Well you said it was your best 500, so maybe you put too much effort in that you got tired afterwards? Push yourself real hard when you're nearing the end not that early. At that point you should be going at a reasonable, yet quick speed.

i feel your pain lol... since im only 11, i havent swam the mile yet. im actually swimmin in 2morrow at a big meet in lancaster. but i have swam the 500 many times early in the mornin, and what happens is i sprint the first 200, and then i start feelin like i just cant move. so basically i swim a 50 in like 34 seconds. This happens because ur tryin to go so fast, that u just lose all ur energy, and all ur technique. u just have 2 push through it, and sprint like ur sprintin a 50. ull get through this "hard sport" and ull b back in ur normal pace again within a 25- 50.

Please help people say I suck on basketball please give me hope?

Perhaps by knowing your opponent is beside you, you tend to be the same position as your opponent. In short you are under stress to maintain your position. So perhaps you should swim at your pace and don't worry about where your opponent position is.

I think i'm sick plz help?

The mile is a tough race to gauge. It'll change every race. I can tell you that splitting a p.r. in the opening 500 is probably not the best way to start a mile. Great if you can hold it, but that's not likely. I always try to build my mile. The first 500 should be smooth, not slow, but make it feel good. Then pick it up, make it hurt more for the second 500. After the 1000 you have to kick up to a new level of pain, then sprint the last 150. Don't wait until 75 or 50 to sprint, everyone does that. Move early and hold on. The mile is all about who is tougher mentally. It's going to hurt, that's just how it is.
