Which type of goggles are better for swimming in open water? Are larger lens goggles, or smaller lenses?
I am picking up open water swimming (ocean and lake) and I am looking for a type of goggles which will allow the greatest visibilty. I am not looking for any answers which refer to a mask, or "Aquasphere" goggles. I'm looking at standard goggles.

Your current pool goggles are likely the small ones that fit snugly in your eye socket -- racing goggles, in other words. They are great for the pool, but are not very comfortable for the length of time you will be out in open water. For that, you are better off with a slightly larger goggle that has the soft cushioning around it. Just remember that in the pool, when you finish a set of laps, you usually come up at the end of the pool and flip your goggles off. Because if you don't you wind up with a king sized headache. You can't do that in open water swims, so the cushioned goggles are more comfortable and will give you slightly better peripheral vision as well.
When we're doing open water swims, we have bright red silicone caps to wear -- it's really important to make yourself visible because a lot of boaters aren't looking for swimmers more thn 50m away from the shore.
Have fun out there!
