Scuba Instructors: How much $ can I expect to make as a part time instructor in the US as well as outside?
Answers:
There is no money in being a dive instructor (believe me I know), but there is a ton of money in the sale of scuba diving paraphernalia. Wet suits and dry suites, especially dry suits cost an arm and a leg. Your weight belt, BC, regulator, tank, etc, etc., cost a fortune. Most instructors either work for a larger concern such as a resort, or charter dive boat, or own a dive shop which will allow them to sell these very expensive items to their students.
You will tend to make even less money if you're instructing outside the US. Dive instructors outside the US are a dime a dozen and therefore command very little money.
Instead of working as an instructor, why not sell your services in nearby marinas. It's easy money, and a lot of it, diving for lost motors, boat screws and expensive fishing gear are what you'll be doing most, and the majority of these dives are in the channel or alongside the pier. If you live near the water like I do (Long Island) you can almost make it a full time job.
