Tips for swimming!?

To start with you should be kicking constantly in freestyle swimming but for practice some of us prefer to kick when we breathe out of our side. It helps you balance a little in the water they say and people who've been swimming for a decently long time will likely be doing this.

Also for your hand motion, don't drag your hand all the way back through the water if you are. Creating more of a distance to travel can put more stress on your hand and it'll also create more distance for your hand to travel in competitive swimming which in turn will slow you down which is exactly what you don't want to do.

Next, you can also try longer breaths. I've seen a lot of people breathe every 2 strokes (every time your left or right hand comes up you always breathe with that same arm coming up). You can try doing 3 strokes per breath (adding one arm's rotation until you breathe) to try and help out this problem.

Lastly, you can try getting more of a pull on your hand motion going through the water. Your breathing arm should come to just about above your belly button and your non-breathing arm(s) should come to just about above your hip. If your hand pulling is the problem this will likely fix it.

How many feet in a block and how many blocks in a mile?

I'm sorry. Swimming is not a sport, it is a way to keep from drowning.

Kites also work underwater? -- Or have I actually been lied to?

Right, I don't know the lingo for this in English, but I hope it still makes sense to you.

You should work on staying in a stable position while swimming. Stay stretched. Keep a steady pace with your legs to maintain a balanced position in the water. Do not turn your body too far when you take a breath. Do not let one side of your body drop when you turn your head to breathe. Breathe on both sides (like once every 3 strokes) to get a feel for what you're doing wrong.

Try and swim as if you are trying to keep your shoulders above the waterline without getting into a diagonal position (so use those legs!). Avoid unnecessary resistance, do not move sideways with your body, just rotate your arms. Keep long, steady strokes. Try and get a feel for your balance by not starting the next armstroke until your first hand touches the other (just for practice and not competition of course).

I'd have to see you swim to know what exactly you're doing wrong. But with some basic points of attention you should be able to improve your position while swimming. And remember: be lazy! Try and be as fast as you can with as little effort. Of course you need to put in a lot of hard work to become the best, but technique is about swimming as effectively as possible. Minimum resistance and maximum effect from effort is what you are looking for technique-wise.

What exercises can I do in my pool?

keep ur toes pointd. sounds stupid but wil help you kick faster. don't make huge long kicks, kick short and fast. also, keep your fingers together. your body should roll durin freestyle but it sounds like ur actually turning on2 ur side, so keep your elbows bent and high during ur strokes and focus on not turning. get ur hands into the water in line with ur shouldrs. try and look at the botom of the pool when ur not breathing and when u r breathing, just turn ur head slightly so one half is stil in the water. try and keep your body quite stiff and make sure your in a proper vertical position. mayb if you want 2 improve u shud join a club or somthing, cos u cant realy help unles they'v cn u. btw, swimming is so a sport. i dont get up at 4.30am five days a week to stop myself from drowning. the person who sed that clearly cant swim.

Is there an indoor swimming pool in New Albany, Indiana?

Okay... I give the same answer to everyone, but it's true! So spare me here.

What you need to do is get yourself a swim coach. If you are already on a swim team, great. During practice/workout, ask your coach to watch your freestyle. After the lap, he/she will give you tips on how to make it more efficient. Make sure you tell him/her about any concerns you have about your stroke. He/she will be happy to help.

If you are not on a team, consider signing up for lessons at your local pool. That way, you can get one-on-one attention at the pace you need to improve your level of swimming.

Whatever you do, though, make sure you are not hurting yourself. Sometimes, by performing a stroke in the "wrong" way, it can cause stress to certain muscles and you could be hurting yourself without even knowing it. Better to get it right soon as to save yourself for later.

Hope this helps! :)
