Purge refers to a valve that allows you to easily clear the mask of water by exhaling through your nose.

A water-filled mask (or regulator) is a big pain in the butt when diving or snorkeling. Some low-end masks don't have a purge valve but there are other ways to clear the mask.

a purge mask has a built in valve that is suppose to make it easier for clearing. I find that the valve pokes you in the nose and can be irritating so I just use a regular mask and life it slightly when I exhale to clear the mask.
