Swimming as cardio after intense weight lifting?

I enjoy swimming laps after an intense weight workout, but I'm afraid that the aerobic worout may cause my body to divert its resources into toning instead of building muscle (which is what I want from my anearobic weight lifting). Is my fear unfounded or should I consider a different regime?

Yes you should change your routine. You are wasting the effects of working out if you swim after workouts. Simply put you are trying to tear you muscle cells and then allow the blood to circulate and repair the damage you did while working out, increasing the size and strenght of your muscles. After working out you should walk around keeping your arms below shoulder height and legs below waist height. Do lots of stretching. You should if you can do your cardio first be it swimming. jogging or on the bike, this gives you a good warm up increasing blood flow to all muscle groups and gets your endorphins and adrenaline pumping increasing your results. Work your leg muscles more often (the largest muscle group in the body). This will result in faster gains for all your other muscles. Most body builders do not do these simple things.

I would personally suggest weightlifting a day, and swimming a half mile the next day.

listen, if you want to be all packed up swimming is not the sport you should do..

Swimming laps after a hard weightlifting session will transform some of the lactic acid you built up into glucouse again.. this will prevent you from being sore the next day. Streching and warming down will do the same. Doing more excersise wont counteract the effects of the weights..

If you do swim, you will have more flexible muscles, you wont be sore and will be able to work out more often
