The NLS Instructor in me has to put my two cents in on this one.IT IS NOT A SAFE IDEA TO HOLD YOUR BREATH UNDERWATER!
Most people when attempting this will breathe rapidly beforehand (consciously hyperventilate) in order to have "more air" to stay down longer.
Your brain has a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) detector in it that regulates your breathing (how much/when to breathe). When you oversaturate your brain with oxygen, it shuts the detector off. Yes- you heard right- your brain doesn't think it needs to be able to breathe!
And why is this dangerous? When the CO2 detector is finally switched back on, because your brain realizes it need oxygen, like, 10 seconds ago, you need to breathe immediately. Plus, most of the time you will be unconscious at this point.
Dangerous anytime, but especially underwater because you will inhale air and begin to drown.
Please please please people- stop this silly contest. It isn't a joke... I've seen so many accidents.
