If the wave is slow, wall high big, it is no doubt a tsunami so run for the highest ground. You may be a coward but a live coward.
If its only a medium wave, such as a surfing wave and you are not surfing, run away from it as well. Sometime you cant, and rogue waves that pluck people just walking by the rocks can happen. If you are lucky and you were walking with a life preserver (unlikely) you might survive it. It you were surfing, then hey- ride it.

The only time I would suggest diving under a wave is when you are swimming in the ocean and the water is not as calm as you are used to. It is best not to swim, but if you did and you see a wave pulling anything out to the sea, you know that it will take you with it, roll you up and smash you on the sand. (curlers)
Since it is not life threatening , play with the physics of the wave. The worst that can happen is that you get a mouthful of sand.
