There is no "one" single key to being a good tennis player. but three key things that if you work hard on will improve your game are your forehand, the serve and your movement.First, the forehand. This shot, for novice/intermediate players, should be their primary weapon and their shot that produces the most winners. Master the flat forehand that hits deep into your opponents back court, and score some points by aiming for their feet .
Second, the serve. A good serve is essential. Use it to set up your game plan for the next few shots. Learn how to pull our opponent out wide then come to net to volley a winner. Or serve it up the tee for an ace. Work on your serve the most, because if you master it you will be ab;e to win some cheap points with with aces and serve your way out of trouble, like on break points. Master the flat serve first. On your first serve, your goal should be to hit it as flat and as hard as you can. Your second serve should focus on spin and placement.
Third, movement. Tennis is a game of movement. You have to have endurance to play, and your footwork has to be clean. If you have good footwork you can get to balls quicker and with less energy. You can run around your backhand, if its not great, and hiot your forehand which will probably be your stronger side.
Hope that helps!

the point your on. don't think about the future or the past just the present. that will make you a good player. if you think to much about a point you need you will probably just louse it so just focus on the present. Andre once sayed "My goal are a inch a head of me the next match the next game the next point the next shot" i think this time you should take some advice from the old man.
to your other question i would say you need a well rounded game, or at least cover your weakness as well as you can, but really focus on your serve, forehand, and backhand. you can work on your volleys later. try this website for some good tennis tips.
