The general rule is strings should be replaced as many times per year as you play per week. In reality it will depend on the type and construction of the string. Most strings will give you the best performance for approx. 20 hours of court time. After 40 - 50 hours of court time it is best to replace.

The reason you want to replace so frequently is because over time strings lose their playing properties. As this happens the ability of the strings to help absorb shock is reduced. When the ball strikes the strings, there is a collision that creates a fair amount of shock. The racquet frame, strings and grip work together to absorb the shock. Newer strings are generally good shock absorbers. As their ability to absorb shock is reduced, more is transmitted to the body. This can cause pain in the elbow (called tennis elbow) and sometimes the wrist or shoulder. Changing strings frequently is an issue of health and is especially important for young players still developing and growing.

It can also be argued that time also decays some of the shock absorbing properties of the strings. Even if a racquet doesn;t have 40 hours of play, if the strings are 9 - 12 months old, it is probably a good idea to restring.

What are the differences bet. running shoes & tennis shoes when it comes to soles?

rule of thumb is restring the racket as many times a year as you play a week

so the child plays 3 times a week, so 3 times a year

even if they aren't being used strings can still lose tension and once the strings lose their pop it can mess up a beginers swing...you can tell if the strings are starting to go even if they haven't broken by

1. the ball flies off the racket
2. doesn't make a ping sound when you hit the strings
3. begin to wear heavily

Hope this helps!
