The ATP Race player gets it and conceivably the 2 sets of rankings are supposed to match up at the end of the year but this is not always the case. The ATP Race points are a really confusing system, IMO. They are being displayed now and are totally inaccurate and irrelavant to anything right now. Nadal is listed as the 15th best player in the world. Ridiculous!I believe that a rule existed that said that if a player won a Slam, they would get automatic entry to the year-end tournament, but I'm not sure if that rule still exists. In 2005, there was a lot of confusion as to whether Safin would be able to play, if he came back from injury. He had won the Aus Open that year.
On the women's side, Venus didn't get into the year-end championship in 2005, despite winning Wimbledon.

I think that in general it's the "top 8 from the ATP Race" but with Grand Slam winners substituting if they are ranked lower. However, I believe that there is a stipulation that said Grand Slam champions must be at or above a certain ranking (20th or something to that effect). The race just demonstrates who's been best this calendar year, and in general, should miroor the race following the Master's Cup (there are some exceptions, I think).The first three answers are all wrong. The top 8 players from the atp rankings play in the ATP Masters cup. Last year Federer won as always. The other finalist were Blake, Nadal, Nalbandian, Roddick, Davydanko, Lubijic, and Tommy Robredo. They were the top 8 players in the atp rankings.
