I've played since freshman year of high school (just graduated college) and my TI-7 has been faithful to me to this day. Yonex doesn't make TIs anymore, but you should look into their Muscle Power series.

Getting the right racket is based on your strengths and weaknesses, as well. Talk with a badminton store owner about the areas of your game that are strong, and those that you want to improve on.

What if your overweight? can you still try out for tennis?

Hi!

I've been playing for about 10 years, and have got a Pro Kennex carbonpro B727, which has lasted me for years (I doubt they still make these). My brother's been playing almost as long, and he's got a Prince racket, which has also lasted him a while. You're right - there are loads of brands and models you can go for, and a lot of them will probably be good. I wouldn't go for one of the cheapest ones made out of steel, as they're a lot heavier and you can't get as much power out of them. (Compare weights in the shop).

Apart from that, I think my coach recommends looking for a racket which is a single piece (on some of them, the shaft is a different piece to the head).

There are lots of slightly different shapes, but I don't think this matters loads unless you're really into the game. You'll soon get used to the racket you get.

The grip on the racket is another thing my coach mentions. You can easily buy a separate grip for the racket which sticks on if the racket doesn't come with a good grip.

I've had to have my racket restrung a couple of times over it's life (best to restring the whole thing if the string goes). Each time it's probably lasted about 3 years, but that probably depends on your playing style.

Hope this helps.

Have fun playing!
