To check to see if the ball is good, a flat ball won't do what you need it to, balls have a very short life span and need to be in propper shape for a game. At the top levels you will go through many sets of balls in one match. Also the rythmic bouncing is to set the timing of the serve and followthrough. Each player has their own sequence of dribbling and service to stay focused. It puts them in "the zone". I think it was Jimmy Connors who first started that. Anyone correct me?
