Can't the umpire over-rule a wrong call as evidenced by Hawkeye?
Question:In the recent Australian open, Gonzales should have won the first set if the umpire over-ruled the lineman's call whether it was challegned or not. My point is it is about time to proceed in the right
path to follow while the game is in progress. If it is in, why let the game continue on a wrong call by the lineman.
Tennis would be better enjoyed if wrong calls were identified and corrected on the spot.

Yes they should be able to. It's something I also felt needed to be looked into for future tennis matches using this umpiring technique. As this was the first time 'Hawkeye' was used in this nature I definately think that the umpires need to be told more about their rights in the role. Clearly the umpire's role of being able to overrule clearly wrong judgements should have been reinforced to prevent mistakes occuring which may damage the reputation of the umpires.I feel that 'Hawkeye' should mainly be used in the cases where a player is unhappy with a call, which they feel should be double checked.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but the Hawkeye system is flawed. If a player wastes his or her challenges and faces a wrong call, they are unable to do anything about it, except hope that their opponent has enough sportmanship to challenge the call(not gonna happen except in some special cases). I remember seeing this actually happen in Serena's semi match against Vadisova. She had wasted her challenges and could not challenge a point that would have given her the match, and although she did win in the end, it shows that the sytem is meant to appeal to the fans and not actually help the players.More Questions & Answers...
