Is it advisable to change to a slightly eastern forehand grip to get more power on my serve?
a few days back, my coach suggested that i use a slightly eastern forehand grip to increase my power on my serve. but the thing is, i wasn't that convinced that it would significantly speed up my serve. furthermore, i have a fear that it might not work out for me in the end. please help me give your views on this matter.

IN GENERAL... for a flat fast serve (flat being the key and low percentage) use an eastern forehand grip with the toss out front and to the right more (6-8"). At this point do not confuse power with pace. If you have a spin/kick serve and want more power the 'slightly eastern grip' won't do it, it may give the ball more pace however. More power for a spin or kick come from better use of legs. Accelerate your swing sooner on the up stroke and relax more at contact. (snap). If your serve is a spin serve the more effort you put in going up to hit the ball the more you drive it in and the greater percentage of success. Most strong servers on the men's tour hit the ball just as hard or even harder on the second serve but with a lot more spin to drive/force the ball into the service box.My guess is you put more effort in when you are striking the ball and not enough effort leading up to the strike. People who do this generally loose their serve when their arm gets tired and your power would be based on strength and not mechanics. Think of it as a whip with the snap at the top.
...now go up hard and hit it!

No! I would definitely advise you not to go there. Continental much better and eventually you'll be able to get a lot more power out of continental than you'll ever get with eastern. Just be careful that you continental isn't too extreme, but other than that, just keep practising.CALLING ALL TENNIS PLAYERS: What is your favorite pre-match "pump up" music?
