Does height of a player gives a big advantage in tennis?
Does height of a player gives a big advantage in tennis?Or it doesnt matter. Is it better to be taller or shorter?
Answers:
For the tall player (as stated by most posters), the serve will be a formidable weapon. The amount of torque, or twisting force, or essentially the power that can be generated because of the wingspan is immense. However, for the short player, they can return a compacted shot back (using their lower center of gravity), forcing the tall player to return a shot requiring him to readjust and deviate from his normal stance (a little lower), thereby producing a weak offensive to defensive shot.
A taller player can move and reach point A to B probably much quicker than the shorter player (as the tall player moves towards the net to poach), but then again, the shorter player can create passing, angular shots, forcing the taller player in an awkward position to return a weak, offensive shot because of his high center of gravity.
The taller player can play baseline, producing shots which bounce a little higher than what the shorter player may be accustomed to. The shorter player can accomodate by staying one step back, or produce an equal bounce height to the tall opponent, by creating huge topspins (look at Raphael).
Everything is in check and balances, and will once again depend on the player recognizing and using their strengths.
Why is Andy Murray so famous just because he beat roger federer?
All other things being equal, height will be an advantage as the serve will benefit from the "lever" effect of a longer arm and a greater angle. Doesn't mean Lleyton Hewitt can't win, just makes it harder.Im looking for a Head racquet that gives Control and Power Prices from $0-110?
nope.Who thinks Federer can beat Nadal on clay?
I dont think many sports offer an advantage due to height, apart from the obvious ones.As for tennis. power, fitness and skill are the main factors here.
Just think of the pros and cons of a player short or tall then judge for yourself.
Who would win....Sampras v Becker ??
Its not easy to answer is it?? but i dont think in a discusion height would be in the top 5 when your talking positive and negatives.

Who do you think was/is the best male tennis player in recent times?
It is easy for a taller player to serve, when he/she starts playing. After a while everybody developes a serve and height dosen't make a difference.Other than the serve height has no advantage!
Does tennis get boring after an while?
Height does give some advantage. And if you have long legs, it is all the better! You can move quicker and serve faster. But, shorter players like Justine Henin, are more compacted and have alot of power! In the 12 point tiebreaker, when do players change ends of the court?
Not really. Height has it's advantages and disavantages. It's advantages : Longer legs= better reach.
Diadvantages: You would have to bend your knees way more than other people to lower your position, making it much more difficult.
Is Jimmy Connors REALLY doing Andy Roddick (and by extension, American tennis) any good?
Average height of ATP men's tennis in Jimmy Connors day 5'10" today 6' 1"+.Advantage is serve and volley. Towering servers dominate speed clock on the men& women's circuit. Volley more reach and more difficult to pass more mass at net.
Seen through rankings height doesn't win top spots but facilitates power and psycological edge.
Would you condole Sania (and India) for loosing against Chinese Girl in Asiad.?
Yes, it is an advantage, coz that helps a lot in serve, for example: Ivo Karlovic isn't very very good in playing Tennis, I mean not like the top guys, but he beat many of them coz he's very tall, he serves many aces. But, at the same time it doesn't really matter there is Justine Henin who is 166 cm, one of the shortest players, though she's in the top.
Where can I find Squash court to play Squash in Indianapolis?
dont listen to any of the other noobs answering. The truth is that the taller, the more of an advantage you have. It clearly states in USTA magazines. Now 6' 0" is about standard. People who are shorter than the standard have a disadvantage, but it doesnt mean they still cant win. Height mostly helps in serving. But if you're like Hingis then you can make up for you height disadvantage with your sheer skill. so yes it does offer an advantage if you are taller. you're at a disadvantage if you're short.More Questions & Answers...
