Rating system?
It looks like players on the pro tour carry over their points from the previous year. Is that correct? If so, it is a biased system because it favors those who are already highly rated. Or do the carryover points "go away" at some point during the season? Just wondering.

Each year when an event is played...like right now the Tennis Masters Series, Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, CA--Those points earned in the previous year come off the players ranking, and how he does this year is then added on. For Example Roger Federer Won the event last year and earned 500 ATP points for his entry ranking, those 500 came off his ranking as the event is being played right now (one year from when he earned those points). This year he lost in the first round to Guillermo Canas, thus earning 5 points. The net effect is that Federer has lost 495 points from last year to this year. Federer started with 8210 going into this event and now have 7715 after this event. Rafael Nadal, who is #2 in the world had 4480 coming into this event. Take off how ever many points he earned last year, then since he is in the finals you will add on anywhere from 350 if he loses in the final or 500 if he should win the final on Sunday against Novak Djokovic. The Following is a more advanced explanation of how total events are factored into the ranking of each player for what is known as (Indesit ATP World Ranking *Entry Ranking)The ATP Entry Ranking is based on each players total points from the 13 'mandatory' events - the 4 Grand Slams and the 9 ATP Masters Series tournaments - and his best 5 results from all eligible International Series tournaments from the past 52 weeks. There is a Special year end Tennis Masters Cup Event that counts as an additional 19th tournament, but only for the top 8 players in the world who qualify.
For each 'mandatory' event a player is not accepted he may count one extra International Series event towards his ATP Ranking.
What is Roger Federer's weakness?
no the points are only from this year but the this years original ranking don't start until after the Australian open then all of the rankings are true the reason that the rankings look the same is because the best players are all still the best player in tennis it takes about 5 years for a full turn over of the big name and the one that once were good/'/well wat they are showing on yahoo is the old ranks, they dont update they point that were given out until that same tournament has passed, ex: federer won the french open last year, yahoo will show that he still has thoes points until the french open from this year is over, then whoever wins well be shown with the points

yes, they do carry over points from the previous season. but only for their ranking, in the race, they all start on 0 at the beginnig of the year.the points that they carry over from the previous season are replaced once the tournament which they got a particular amount of points on is played again. if they achieve the same result they will not lose any points. if they achieve better, then they will gain points, if they do worse then they will lose points.
