Get yourself a big bucket of balls, used or new. Go to the court, and hit your second serve over and over again. There are many, many things to help you out. Here are a few simple ones:1. Toss the ball higher. This will force you to reach higher, which creates the downward plane for an effective serve.
2. Practice your accuracy before your power. Hit ten serves to the outside, then ten serves down the middle. Power comes second.
3. Develop a pre serve routine that you do EVERY SERVE. This helps with nerves as well as practice.
The others have good tips for you, here is another. Learn a good spin serve first, use it on both first and second serves. Once you have mastered the serve and are able to place it at will and double-fault only rarely, move on to a powerful first serve. Confidence is something that you need most when serving, especially when you get to those critical "points" in a match, those pressure points. I read an article by Poncho Gonzales years ago on the kick serve, I used it on both serves until I could play several matches without ever double-faulting. Once I did that I started to hit bigger flatter serves on the first serve, confident my second serve would not fail me.
Also, get a few lessons from a pro on this and to make sure your motion and grip are correct. Then, practice a lot. I'd say hit 200 balls per day to each side. Also, build up your abs.
