When I try to put topsin on the ball in tennis it usually ends up sailing long, what am I doing wrong?

topspin actually makes the ball come down fater so you may be swinging your tennis racket through with the face of racket too open.if the racket's face is pointed upwards or is flat then when you swing from low to high the ball will go long every time. You have to get the racket's face closed and swing from low to high in order to generate topspin. It is tough at first but once yo get it tennis is that mouch more fun.
More than likely, you're either meeting the ball with your racquet face too open, or you're swinging upwards too steeply.
There are other reasons as well, but I couldn't say until saw your stroke.
