Well... since most people answered male players, I'm going to go with Margaret Court. Look at the AMAZING NUMBERSShe won the most Grand Slam singles titles in history with 24 (11- Australian, 5 - French, 3 - Wimbledon, 5- US Open), she also won the most combined titles (singles, doubles and mixed) with 62. An amazing 24 singles, 19 doubles, and 19 mixed. It's hard to debate numbers like that.to say that Margaret Court isn't one of the best ever...you would be fooling yourself!!
All of this was done in a amazing 15 year period from 1960 thru 1975. She won the Grand Slam in 1970 only one of three women to win the Grand Slam; the others were Maureen Connolly and Steffi Graf; and she won 3 of the four grand slams in 4 other years (1962 - lost at Wimbledon, 1965 - lost at French Open, 1969 - lost at Wimbledon , and 1973 - lost at Wimbledon) . In 1963 she and Ken Fletcher became the only Mixed Doubles pair in history to win the Grand Slam.
She won 90% of her career grand slam matches:
French Open (47-5); Wimbledon (51-9); US Open (51-6) and the Australian Open (61-3)..In 47 career grand slam tournaments...she got to the quarterfinals or better 43 times! and her record against unseeded players you ask...146-2.
I don't think that any player puts numbers like this over a 15 year career. Margaret Court was the TRUE queen of tennis! No question!
