Why in tennis is it love, 15, 30, 40, deuce and not 1, 2, 3 etc etc?

Which team won the Women's Doubles Championship, in the US Open 2003?

For some reason it was originally based the the hands of a clock, I am unsure as to where deuce comes from but the 15, 30 and 40 are from the relevent minutes on the clock.

wiki pedia says:

As simple as this scoring appears, the running score of each game is described in a manner peculiar to tennis: scores of zero to three points are described as "love" (or "zero"), "fifteen", "thirty", and "forty", respectively. The origin of this scoring comes from the (quarterly) stations of the clock, where "forty" was, presumably, easier to say than "forty-five." The use of "love" for zero comes from "l'oeuf," French for 'egg.' (The use of 'goose-egg' for a zero score is common in baseball.) When stating the score, the server's score is stated first. If the server announces the score as "thirty-love," for example, it means that the server has won two points and the receiver none.

If each player has won three points, the score is described as "deuce" rather than "forty-all". From this point on, whenever the score is tied, it is described as "deuce" regardless of how many points have been played. The player who wins the next point after deuce is said to have the advantage. If the player with advantage loses the next point, the score is again deuce, since the score is tied. If the player with the advantage wins the next point, that player has won the game, since the player now leads by two points. When the server is the player with the advantage, the score is stated by him before the next point as "advantage in." When the server's opponent has the advantage, the server states the score as "advantage out." These phrases are sometimes shortened to "ad in" and "ad out."

Who will Mens French Open?

Because only toffs play tennis and common folk can't follow the awkward scoring system, so it keeps any unwanted riff raff from attempting to join the club.

Why did Kimberly Williams and Pete Sampras split?

In the early days, both rackets scoring and tennis scoring were used for lawn tennis. A rackets scoring game comprised 15 aces, won by the server, who remained ‘hand in’ until the loss of a rally. Tennis scoring was adopted for the first Wimbledon Championships in 1877 and became the standard.

The origins of the 15, 30, 40 scores are thought to have medieval and French roots. It is possible a clock face was used on court, with a quarter move of the hand to indicate a score of 15, 30, and 45. When the hand moved to 60, the game was over.

The term ‘deuce’ comes from the French ‘deux’, where an advantage of two points has to be gained to win the game. ‘Love’ may come from the French ‘l’oeuf’, the egg, symbolising nothing. Another explanation may come from the phrase “neither for love nor for money” – in other words, for nothing.

Hope this helps.

Who is winning the cleavage war on court at the U.S. Open or in the WTA? Serena Williams excepted, get it?!?

LOVE is supposed to be the shape of an egg which equals zero (egg in french is ouef so the egg is l'ouef, appologies to the french spelling)
