Why do volleyball players use sticking plasters to their fingers?

Is volleyball a sport just for girls or do boys compete in leaugues too??

This is news to me. I would assume to get a bit more stick on the ball when they set. But Ive played for 20 years and never seen a college/professional player do that. We mostly just file our finger tips down so we can get a bit more feel. Setters hands need more feeling rather then grip.
