Why do you hit a volleyball with your arm and not your hand?

Are you talking about bumping? You use the arms because your "platform" is larger, wider, flatter than the hands. This helps with accuracy and control. When standing you are able to easily carry a ball on your arms or platform. Try this on your hands. Not so easy.your inner arm (flat) is easier to keep steady and have the ball go the way you want, where as your fist or open hand will lead the ball astray, and you have not much control over the ball.( many bruises and broken veins though )Loved It !

sometimes when you(more me) hit the ball with your hand you intend to hit it down and when you hit it w/ur arm it goes up so someone else can get over the net if you dontget it over the net.The correct terminalogy would be 'why do you PASS a volleyball with your arm and not your hand' You pass the ball with your inner part of your are due to the fact that it is flatter than any other surface. (it is also the rule) If you pass it with any other part it could 'shank' off in any direction. You do however HIT with your hand due to the fact that your hand allows you to aim at the spot on the court you want to hit.
Because right above the wrist is a flat surface, and if you hit it there, you will be able to control the direction of the volleyball easier.
