i would think the reason is for more comfort...when i participate in sports i wear underarmour (spandex) boxer briefs under my uniform.boxers bunch up.And considering how low the girls have to get to dig out spikes...the spandex are a necessity. Also, it dont hurt to be lookin good in those tight shorts
