Most important - and most overlooked - technique in spiking is your spike approach. The volleyball spike approach is identical in function to a baseball pitcher's wind-up. Unfortunately for us, we don't have the luxury of a pitcher's mound, and a pitching rubber on which we can push off. We need to oriented our hips and shoulders while in the air. How do we do that? A lot of what happens in the air comes from what we do on the ground during the spike approach.

If you are right handed, your last three steps should be left-right-left, with the last two, the right-left, being more like a step-close than two distinct steps, in which you "close" the left foot very near the right, so your toes are nearly touching, but not too close.

The last right step (before the left-close) should be much, much larger than the preceding left, or the succeeding left-close. The last right step is like a hop, or a leap, where you start to generate horizontal momentum.

When you land the last two steps, you should land on your heals, and then rock from your heals to your toes. The heal-toe action will re-direct your horizontal momentum to vertical jump.

If you are right handed, it is very important for you to jump with your left foot slightly in front of your right, but only slightly. The toes should be near each other.

By putting your left foot is in front of your right foot, you will setup the rest of your body for a good spike. This will put your left hip in front of your right, and your left shoulder in front of your right.

When you jump, you should reach-up with your both your arms, but upon reaching your apex, let your right arm and shoulder drop behind, and lower than your left. This will enable a full swing at the ball.

At the height of your jump, your left shoulder should be above and in front of your right. The same goes for your left hip.

At the conclusion of your swing, your right shoulder should switch positions with your left, and the same goes for your hips.

It is the spike approach that setups your hips in shoulders to be in the correct place at the start of your swing.

Of course, lefties must reverse the above instructions.

k, sooo u have to make sure that you r getting on TOP of the ball when u r hitting, and make sure ur hand is spread out on the VB. then, to give it more power, you should arch your back when your hitting to give it a faster and more powerful hit. and this is OPTIONAL, but you can also try approaching faster, it works but it deoends on ur set and how good u r at timing. Practice your aim and not be afraid of the ball when it comes to you. The wriest action and the follow through are very important. Timing and aiming the ball is a concept you and your teamate have to communicate with eachother.

ok one of the answers was to arch your back to get more power and that is very wrong because this will cause major back problems!! when approaching you should be quick and very light on your feet, then contact like she said and make sure you are on top of the ball but you should get a more be powerful and faster by simply a slot machine like arm swing and snapping your wrist. the best way to practice is going through the motions and really over exaggerating the arm swing and snap.
