to HIT the ball over the net there are 3..spike. which is set up off a set when the hitter is in the air...most powerful if done right.

Downball, which is off a set that cannot be spiked., basically get set and reach high, make contact with top spin get it long and to the corners.

Freeball. (liek a pass but from the side dipping your shoulder closest to the net and ROLLING your shoulder to make the ball get long over the net.

passing and setting are key but they are NOT one of the 3 ways to HIT the ball.
