I don't know the first will keep looking, but Flo Hyman is listed in " Who's Who" for being a 3 time all American at Houston and captain of silver medal women's team 1984 Olympics. She tragically died during a match in Japan 1986 of a heart attack (she had a medical condition Marfan Syndrome) Women's Sports Federation anually gives out an award that has her namesake. (b.July 31,1954. d Jan. 24, 1986)

She probally wasn't the first African American volleyball player , but she was a great player at the elite level.

Dain Blanton was the first African America to win in beach volleyball AVP championships 1997, and gold medal 2000.
